The recently renovated El Encanto Hotel holds much history and charm as well as remarkable views. Their terrace restaurant is a lovely place to have a fancy lunch. And after lunch, make sure to walk around the grounds and admire all the architectural details and landscaping.

You know it's fancy when they serve two kinds of butter. European and pepper sage infused. A bit over the top and unnecessary in my opinion.

I went there on two occasions and the first time I enjoyed their BLT. Pretty straight forward sandwich, with ample bacon.
The passion of the chef, I believe, lies in the true courses, not in the sandwiches and salads. During our second visit, I chose the roasted Jidori chicken breast with market vegetables and brown butter mashed potatoes was glorious. The sauce, the vegetables, the butter and sage, all had layers of flavors that required many steps and time to achieve. As you can see, I dove right into it before taking a photo.

My mother had the Seared Ahi Tuna salad with ginger soy vinaigrette. Which she enjoyed, but didn't find special by any means.

Though I normally do not order dessert, I had a bit of a hankering for crème brûlée. It was delectable. The photo makes it look like a deep bowl of brûlée, but the custard was really thin and the sugar crust perfectly breakable. A compressed apple pile on top as well as milk ice cream. The white chocolate stick on top was over kill. Great expressos too.

Perhaps the service is excessive with people checking in all the time to make sure you are okay and there are even little "seats" for your purse, but overall it's a fun experience and if you stick to real dishes, you'll feel like you ate something special.
The Olio empire in Santa Barbara does not disappoint. Their newest addition to their fine dining restaurant and their pizzeria is the Olio Crudo Bar. Beautiful shades of amber fill the small space. Though quite pricey, the food is excellent. Olio treats ingredients with respect and sticks to simplicity.
The Polipo, seen above, was delectable. The octopus was the perfect consistency. None of that super chewy, not-so-fresh seafood here. Placed on new potatoes, thinly sliced aside a frisée lettuce pile lightly dressed in olive oil and lemon. Lightly sprinkled with spicy Controne pepper, each bite was a delight.

A true classic, Vitello Tonato is a true test of Italian cooking. The tuna sauce was light and creamy and the veal ever so thinly sliced. Together - yum.
Pictured above is their Creamy Burrata mozzarella, American paddlefish caviar, crumbled egg, red onion, and chives. I have never had a flavor combination like this before. Who knew caviar and mozzarella married so well! A wonderful surprise and one I highly recommend.
I finally ventured into Lucky Penny in Santa Barbara's Funk Zone, with my trusty four legged friend, and discovered yet another welcoming spot in this corner of our wonderful town. La Colombe is their coffee of choice and it tastes mighty good to me!
And now I share with you the most amazing creative thing about Lucky Penny - the building is covered in pennies! Whoever figured out how to make a wall of pennies is quite the creative genius.

Lucky Penny is not only a coffee place, it is also a pizza joint with its very own, very hot pizza oven cranking out fresh pizzas daily. Grab a pizza to-go or enjoy it straight out of the oven out on the patio. They also make sandwiches and salads, which I have not tried, but they sure sounded tasty.
Santa Barbara's FunkZone has officially become THE place to go on the weekend...or any day really! One of the newest additions is Les Marchands Wine Bar & Merchant. Filled with wonderful decorative details, Les Marchands sells a fantastic selection of local and international wines (and beers!) and serves up wonderful share plates, wines, and beer in the wine bar.
Beautiful antiques are used as serving stations adding a bit of old world flare. At one point during our time there, there was a champagne bucket filled, with bottle in it, hanging out in front of the piece seen below, making me feel like I was in a brasserie of old in Paris.
Their deli holds creative, fresh salads and made-to-order sandwiches. I love a tuna salad sandwich on ciabatta bread. Their tuna salad is quite unique, with bits of fresh apple and nuts in there. But my favorite thing to order there is tea. They serve their loose leaf tea in wonderful little cast iron tea pots and each person gets an unmatched set of cup and saucer. Pair the Earl Grey with the ginger molasses cookie and you're in for a relaxing moment indeed.
Everyone! We need to save the bees! Without them, basically nothing gets pollinated. Nothing gets pollinated, nothing grows, and there is no food. Not a good plan. Our dear bees are dying because of pesticides and other toxic things 'popping up' in our environment. The balance is broken! One way to help is to get a beehive. This is one thing we learned at Kinfolk's Honey Event. What a joy it was to see such passionate people speak about their love: bees. On top of infusing our own honey, we were served a delicious, local ingredient lunch on a perfectly decorated table. Kinfolk, you always know how to throw a fabulous party...
I have been eating Pierre Lafond Montecito Market Chocolate Chip Walnut cookies for 23 years now. They are officially my favorite cookie in Santa Barbara. The Earthquake cookie (all chocolate with chocolate chips and powdered sugar all over it...) is a close second, but nothing beats a classic like this one. Perfectly chewy and oh so satisfying...

At last some different flavors hit the restaurant scene in Santa Barbara! Sama Sama Test Kitchen creates Indonesian inspired dishes and they are treats for the palate. I have now gone there twice and though they are still getting everything organized (don't ask for an iced tea...) and working out the kinks, I think it's going to be quite a hit!

One of the two tables out front on the sidewalk. Perfect people watching place. There is also seating on an amazing outdoor patio (a hidden gem for SB), but they don't always serve out there (yet). Not only is this a hand-crafted chocolates, chocolate shop, it is also a learning-all-about-chocolate zone where they serve hot chocolate. Now, this isn't your normal watery hot chocolate with whipped cream on top. This is a true cup of chocolate. It's like chocolate lava - thick, rich, and dark. Served in charming little cups, grab a seat at the bar and enjoy the goodness! Throw in a couple of their truffles too, you know, since a rich cup of chocolate just isn't enough... Did I mention they make a spicy one too?? Cheers!
Need a fine cocktail and an all night happy hour? Check out The Bourbon Room for unique cocktails created with fresh juices and homemade jazzed up alcohols (cherry, cherry, cherry). On Wednesdays, it's happy hour all night. Yep, that's right. Can't beat that!
They also serve dinner so make it a night and soak up your cocktails with Date with a Pig...or the other tasty dishes their menu holds.
I enjoyed the French Gimlet seen above. A cool atmosphere, friendly staff and good eats ensure a cozy, happy evening.
Mmmmm, fresh squeezed juice. Sure tastes wonderful on a sunny Santa Barbara day. Sure, you could buy your own juicer and the 3-4 lbs of local organic fruits and veggies needed for just one bottle, but why when you can pop over to the Juice Ranch and get yourself a fresh, cool bottle? It costs $10, which at first seems pricey, but just think about it from the cost of the produce to the machine to the time. With a $2 deposit for the bottles, your next juices only cost $8! And in my opinion, it's worth it. Instead of 2 Starbucks coffee drinks in a week, have a juice instead. Fennel in the Machine is my favorite...
The relaxed, welcoming feel is so inviting and once your eyes hit the menu options, your taste buds will make sure you keep coming back to try everything! Started by four locals, this is a great example of wonderful, creative people coming together to make a business happen.
The General Sanders fried chicken sandwich (my favorite right now). The brioche bun is homemade, as is everything on that beautiful thing - the coleslaw, the pickled onions, the pesto-y sauce. The chicken was perfectly moist and not too oily.
The breakfast items are also so enticing! I enjoyed the Rolex, like a breakfast wrap with egg, bacon, avocado and a tomato relish spread inside, which is made on a type of Ugandian flatbread (called a Rolex) the co-owner's discovered while in Africa for their nonprofit The Boso Foundation. Amazing fusion going on here! I love this about The Shop - each menu item has its own story to go along with it, whether it's actual ingredients or culinary notes or just a story to how it got its name.

During the Santa Barbara Bowl season, they will open their doors into the evening to blast tunes of the featured band and so us concert goers have an amazing place to grab a bite to eat and a beer before a show. Personally, I can't wait!!
Used a dumpling presser which I used for the first time in cooking for this. Otherwise I had never used it for its intended purpose as it was my Playdoh toy growing up!
For Christmas I received a mini blow torch for kitchen use, so last week I decided to make crème brûlée. I tend to shy away from baking and desserts as it is so mathematical and I tend to just change up recipes to my liking. This is something you cannot do with baking! I did combine recipes though, as I didn't find one I really liked.

3 cups of heavy cream with one vanilla bean split in two, seeds scraped out and added in too. Brought it to a boil and took it off the heat to steep.
Whisk the 6 egg yolks with a half cup of sugar till it forms 'ribbons'. It gets super thick and white, as seen below.

You then temper the sugar/yolk mixture with some of the warm cream and continue combining the two, which you then strain to get out any coagulated egg.
One of Santa Barbara's newest restaurants, Anchor Woodfire Kitchen is an exciting addition! The atmosphere is quite lively and vibrant. There's a constant movement and buzz, especially as things are quite busy with curious locals and tourists. Located in the new Hotel Indigo, near the train station, you'll see some visitors, but locals are filling the majority of tables. I sat at the bar with my friend and we ordered a couple cocktails. I enjoyed Jason's Negroni (served on the rocks, though they normally do it up) - St.George Botanivore gin, Carpano antica, Campari orange.
The seared scallop over sea urchin risotto looked beautiful nestled in its own deep bowl. The dish was overly salty (and I adore salt) and the risotto too al dente (and I like my risotto al dente), but the base flavors were there. The scallops were cooked to perfection and full of their characteristic sweet, rich flavor.
My favorite dish was the Duck Egg Raviolo with mascarpone, truffles, duck brodo. The pasta is house made and when you cut into the raviolo, the duck egg yolk comes running out mixing with the brodo and parmesan cheese. What a bite this creates!
We also enjoyed a margherita pizza with prosciutto on top. They make their own charcuterie so we just had to add it on the pizza. The prosciutto had a less salty and more mild flavor compared to the Parma kind, and a bit more smokiness. I can't wait to try all the other meat creations they had on their menu. The pizza was good, but I would go there for the pasta and other meat dishes instead.

Make sure to get a reservation or take a chance for a spot at the bar. It's quite the hot spot to go right now so a little planning helps ensure a wonderful night. I am looking forward to biting into the other main meat dishes and exploring the cocktail menu a bit further...not to mention breakfast and lunch!!
Santa Barbara favorite Ca Dario's has at last opened its pizzeria a few doors down and it's delicious. It opened mid December and I had heard multiple opinions about it (not all good...). I ventured in to find out what it was like for myself. I found a small space with few tables and a bar backed with loads of bottles of wine. The small kitchen with the intensely hot pizza oven is squished in the corner. A simple, straightforward menu was presented to us and I found it hard to choose what to order. On top of it, the prices were quite reasonable!

Each dish was made from extremely fresh ingredients. The tomato sauce is super tomato-y and all ingredients, for that matter, taste strongly as they should. The simplicity is quite welcome and ever so the Italian way - fantastic ingredients paired perfectly. The Prosciutto Cotto pizza seen above with mushrooms, mozzarella, and fresh oregano was delicious. The dough is full of flavor and very thin.
And the pizza I will now be craving - the Napoletana - made with white anchovies. AMAZING. It is extremely simple, yes, but done perfectly to my palate's desires. Fresh, flavorful dough and tomato sauce. Bright capers and marinated white anchovies all in one bite equal a very satisfying pizza indeed.

Go for it! Try it out! It's a different pizza experience than the other delicious Italian pizza spot in SB so give it a chance and enjoy! Buon appetito!
The Montecito Wine Bistro is a new addition in the Pierre Lafond empire of Santa Barbara. The menu is full of trendy things like kale and quinoa, as well as classics in the world of pizza and Italian dishes. By the fire one is quite cozy in the rather large space. The wait staff is kind, but not very connected with you as the diner.
The chicken parmigiana I ordered was good, but not excellent. I found the chicken to be a bit dry and the entire thing a bit bland. However, this may just have been a bad choice on my part. My mother enjoyed the quinoa salad seen at the bottom. It had kale and all sorts of healthy goodies in it.
The dishes coming out of the kitchen are quite delicious. I was not sold when Pace first opened. I had eaten a mediocre tomato, mozzarella wrap and had little hope, but I was proven wrong! I ventured in for dinner and had a most scrumptious chicken piccata. The chicken was perfectly cooked and moist and the sauce was zingy with lemon and capers. The side vegetables (that night they were green beans) were fresh and flavorful and their mashed potatoes were not the bland mush you usually find in restaurants. The wait staff is cheery and pleasant creating a light atmosphere. Live music fills the space every night from 8pm to 10pm. On top of it, they have a unique variety of beers on tap. I enjoyed a Lagunitas Pilsner from San Diego. Definitely a great spot for a weekday night out!
Here in Santa Barbara many restaurants come and go as it is a small town with loads of restaurants, but I feel optimistic for the newest one: State & Fig. Why? Because there's bacon...and an enticing menu that lives up to what you read. I recently tried their Mac'n'cheese and their Fig Burger, both of which include our beloved bacon.

The ambiance is light and inviting. Smiling faces greet you as you walk in and everyone is quite helpful and ready to answer all your questions. Natural wood and colors fill the large, high-ceilinged space. Small succulents sit on each table, hugged by the salt and pepper. There are several tables on the patio out front which is lovely as this restaurant is located in the historic La Arcada Court. People watching and beautiful architecture make you feel like you are on vacation.

The Mac'n'cheese is made with fontina, provolone, Parmesan, applewood bacon, breadcrumbs and sure is rich! The bacon really stands up to the medley of cheeses bringing a lovely smokiness to the dish. This is a very filling dish and my friend and I thought it might be even more wonderful as a small plate or first course. One of the best mac'n'cheeses I have in a restaurant in a long while!

The Fig Burger includes fig jam, bacon, caramelized onions, arugula, and bleu cheese. This fantastic combo makes each bite a delight. The bacon was perfectly cooked - a perfect crunch yet still with some chew to it. The saltiness of the bacon paired with the fig jam was wonderful and an idea that has inspired me to create some sort of flatbread with these ingredients at home. The fries are home made and very potato-y. All ingredients are super fresh. There is definitely an attention to detail at State & Fig which most restaurants claim to have, but usually don't. The prices are quite reasonable and the iced tea is good too!

Olio Pizzeria for lunch! Torn between ordering something new or just eating one of their pizzas (which I have a major addiction to...), I ventured into the unknown of the Olio lunch menu. A variety of salads, sandwiches, and egg dishes made choosing very difficult. I was swayed towards a panini because they made pizza pita things as the bread!

My friend enjoyed the butter leaf lettuce salad which looks an awful lot like a salade nicoise... She really enjoyed it as well. Looked delicious.

Of course, their lunch is fantastic and I can't wait to go there for brunch and try one of their egg dishes as they looked very enticing. It's going to be mighty hard not to order a pizza though...
In Mammoth, you'll find Sushi Rei. This very hiptser cool restaurant located in The Village, is filled with locals, beautiful art, and colorful rolls. Exhausted from days of backpacking and still quite full from the restorative burgers we had once off the trail, our stomachs led us to Sushi Rei.
Octopus sunomono. The octopus wasn't too chewy and their sauce was quite good, though I like mine on a more acidic side.
Over the years, I've become more sushi-snobby and moved away from the cream cheese in a roll concept, but for some reason I wanted to try it again. This New York roll (more often known as a Philadelphia roll) was quite tasty and the fried capers were an interesting twist!
These dumplings were delicious. If I lived there, I would crave these and need to eat them that day. Filled with pork and veggies and cooked perfectly, I'll be ordering these during my next visit.
My boyfriend ordered the soup which was filled with pork, mushrooms, noodles, a poached egg, and jalapenos. He ate the entire thing except for a few bites of the noodles I stole. I bet this one is a big seller during the winter months.
Overall, we were both quite pleased with our experience. Though the service was a bit odd, it wasn't bad (if you don't count the young lady that picked up every water glass by the rim with her fingers to refill the glass - ohhhhhh boy...) we found this to be a warm and welcoming locals spot with good food and an awesome atmosphere. Dial 760.934.0774 for reservations.
Jumping on the coffee shop craze that has hit the US, Mammoth has joined in with a new coffee spot called Black Velvet. They must have spent a fortune getting the space the way they wanted it and the machines they have in there and the equipment must have cost a mint. All this creates a very clean, hip, industrial ambiance. White washed floors, off set the darker touches and wooden tables. They do cold-brews (literally cold water poured over ground coffee for hours and hours) and pour overs and fancy drinks with artsy foam designs. It's definitely got all the touches of the cool coffee shop trend including chandeliers, the clear wine bottle water bottles, and sparse shelves. They, of course, roast their own beans!
I unfortunately forgot to write down which brew I ordered, but I believe it was the Peru...the darkest roast, as I love an intense cup of coffee. It was prepared pour-over style and I wish he hadn't put so much water in it, but perhaps I just don't know enough about coffee and this is the way it is supposed to be... Either way, it was quite delicious.
We'll go back for sure, but I hope they get more speedy because there sure are going to be a lot of cold skier and snowboarders standing in line waiting for their hot coffee this winter.
